Leeds Civic Hall & The Lamb & Flag | A Wedding in the Heart of Leeds
Jamie and Amelia are a power couple. There's really no other way of putting it.
Getting married at Leeds Civic Hall is one thing. Walking through the middle of Leeds, freshly married, on your way to your wedding reception? That's main character energy, and I absolutely LOVE it.
Forget the wedding cars and carefully planned grand entrances. These two had an entire city to play with.
And quite frankly, Leeds understood the assignment.
From the Civic Hall to the city streets
Leeds Civic Hall is an absolute beauty. Those grand columns, the incredible stonework, the imposing architecture. It's the sort of place that makes even the most laid-back wedding feel like a pretty big deal.
But what makes a city wedding so brilliant isn't just the ceremony venue. It's everything happening outside it.
The contrast is what gets me.
One minute, you're standing outside this magnificent building, looking every bit the newlyweds. The next, you're navigating the streets of Leeds, surrounded by buses, busy pavements, traffic lights and people just trying to get on with their Friday.
Meanwhile, you've literally just got married.
There's something wonderfully ridiculous about that.
Leeds, you've got my attention
I love photographing weddings where the surroundings become part of the story, rather than just a pretty backdrop.
And Leeds has personality by the bucketload.
The grand architecture gives way to busy shopping streets. Historic buildings sit alongside modern shopfronts. There's the constant movement of city life, the colours, the noise, the reflections in windows and those little pockets of interesting light you only really notice when you've got a camera in your hands.
It's not a perfectly manicured wedding venue. It's a proper, living, breathing city.
And that's exactly why it works.
Walking from your ceremony to your reception means embracing all of it. The pedestrian crossings, the unexpected backdrops, the slightly chaotic beauty of being dressed for a wedding while everyone around you is going about their normal day.
You couldn't manufacture that atmosphere in a studio if you tried.
Jamie and Amelia didn't just get married in Leeds. They made Leeds part of their wedding.
From grand architecture to a proper pub
And where did all this main character behaviour lead?
The Lamb & Flag.
Because after getting married in one of Leeds' most impressive civic buildings and making your way through the city, what better place to celebrate than a proper Yorkshire pub?
I genuinely love that contrast.
The grandeur of Leeds Civic Hall. The energy of the city streets. Then the warmth and character of The Lamb & Flag.
Different settings, completely different atmospheres, but they all belong to the same story.
There's no rule saying a wedding needs a country house, a stately home or an enormous reception venue to be memorable.
Sometimes a city centre ceremony, a walk through town and a pub full of your favourite people is exactly the right combination.
A little bit of chaos. A lot of character.
This is why documentary wedding photography has my heart.
It's not about finding a perfectly empty street or making a couple stand in the same pose twenty different ways.
It's about noticing what makes the day interesting.
The scale of the buildings against two people in wedding attire. The movement of the city around them. Those fleeting little moments that happen naturally between one place and the next.
The bits that might feel completely ordinary at the time, but end up being some of the most interesting photographs from the day.
And when you've got a couple with the confidence and personality of Jamie and Amelia, you don't need to complicate things.
You just let them be themselves.
Jamie and Amelia, absolute icons. Leeds, you weren't too bad either.
