Chesterfield Town Hall | Wedding Portraits & Group Photography

Not every wedding needs a photographer following you around for twelve hours. Sometimes, you just want some cracking photos of the people who matter most.

And that's exactly what Matt and Claire had in mind.

Their wedding at Chesterfield Town Hall was a lovely reminder that wedding photography doesn't have to mean full-day coverage, hundreds of photographs or a camera appearing every time you pick up a glass.

They wanted two things: group photographs with their favourite people and some proper portraits of the two of them.

Simple. Relaxed. Job done.

A little bit of Chesterfield charm

There's something about Chesterfield Town Hall that makes it such a brilliant setting for wedding photographs.

The grand stone architecture, the impressive entrance and those beautiful traditional details give the place plenty of character. It's elegant without feeling over the top, and makes a fantastic backdrop for newlyweds.

And when you've got a setting like that, you really don't need to overcomplicate things.

For Matt and Claire, the focus was on making the most of their time together and getting the photographs they actually wanted.

No endless shot lists. No disappearing for hours. Just a little time set aside for the people and photographs that mattered.

Everyone together, then just the two of them

Group photographs sometimes get a bad reputation.

You know the drill. Everyone standing around wondering where Uncle Dave's wandered off to while someone tries to organise twenty people who have absolutely no intention of listening.

But group photos are important.

They're the photographs that end up on mantelpieces, in frames at your parents' house and being pulled out years down the line.

For Matt and Claire, they were a priority, and rightly so.

Once the group photographs were taken care of, the attention turned to the newlyweds themselves.

Couple portraits don't have to be an elaborate production. You don't need to be professional models, know your angles or spend ages practising your wedding poses in the mirror.

A little direction where needed, a good location and the freedom to actually enjoy being together.

That's the approach I love.

Your wedding, your way

One of my favourite things about photographing Matt and Claire was how straightforward their plans were.

They knew exactly what they wanted from their wedding photography, and that's what we concentrated on.

Not every couple wants getting-ready photographs, speeches or dance floor coverage. And not every wedding needs it.

Sometimes an hour or two of photography is all that's needed to give you a beautiful collection of memories without turning your entire day into a photoshoot.

Matt and Claire understood the assignment. A gorgeous setting, their favourite people and some lovely photographs to look back on.

And really, what more do you need?

Wedding photography without the full-day commitment

If you're getting married at Chesterfield Town Hall, or anywhere else for that matter, and only want photographs of your family, friends and the two of you, that's absolutely something I offer.

I'm Jay, a Derbyshire-based wedding photographer with a relaxed, documentary-inspired approach. Whether I'm photographing your entire wedding or popping along for portraits and group photographs, the aim is always the same.

Photographs that look like you, without making the whole thing unnecessarily complicated.

Because you shouldn't have to book ten hours of photography when all you really want is ten brilliant photographs with your favourite people.
